THE BEST OF THE BEST:
The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Holy Family Catholic School, known as St. Lucy Filippini National Junior Honor Society, is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to 7th and 8th grade students who meet the required standards in four areas of evaluation: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Standards for selection are established by the national office and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs. Students are selected to be members by a five-member Faculty Council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year. For the scholarship criterion,a student must have achieved a final average of 92% in the five core subject areas (Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies). Grades 7 & 8 transfer students will be eligible if they are current NJHS members, or if they qualify based on the above criteria from school records from the previous academic year and they have demonstrated the highest standards in academics, behavior and spirituality. Students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Student Activity Information Form that provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service. A history of leadership experiences and participation in school or community service is required. A point system is used to determine selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection. Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school.
Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance in all four criteria that led to their selection. This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held during the school year and participation in the chapter service projects. Additionally, members are required to fulfill a minimum of 11 service hours a trimester in addition to the required Outreach hours. A minimum of four hours per year must be fulfilled at the chapter organization, Give Kids the World and four hours per year at an adopted charity of the member’s choice. Members failing to meet the minimum requirements in a trimester will be placed on probation the following trimester. Repeatedly failing to meet the minimum requirements can result in removal from the Chapter. Any questions should be directed to the 8th grade teacher chapter advisor.
